Hello, I’m Sanjay Singh Sontiyal, a quality manager in the medical laboratory sector. My job keeps me on my toes, with little time to spare. But on Independence Day 2024, I finally got a day off. I thought it would be a great opportunity to relax, but instead, I found myself struggling with something unexpected: spending time in my room without my smartphone. This experience made me realize just how dependent we’ve become on these devices, and I wanted to share my thoughts on why it’s so difficult and what we can do about it.


The Modern-Day Dilemma:

Why is it so tough to be without our phones? Here’s what I think:

1. Constant Connectivity: 

We’re always connected—to work, to family, to friends. Our phones are our lifeline, and being without them can make us feel disconnected.

2. Information at Our Fingertips:

 Whether it’s checking the news, watching a video, or finding a recipe, our phones give us everything instantly. Without them, it feels like something is missing.

3. Dependence on Technology:

 From setting alarms to tracking our schedules, our phones are like personal assistants. Take them away, and we feel lost.

4. Psychological Effects:

I’ve read that using phones releases dopamine, making us feel good. No wonder it’s hard to put them down!y

My Personal Experience:

During my day off, I found myself reaching for my phone out of habit. When I didn’t have it, I felt restless. It was like a part of me was missing. I realized that I’d become so used to having my phone around that I didn’t know what to do without it. Maybe you’ve felt the same way too?


Why It’s Important to Disconnect:

After some reflection, I began to see the benefits of stepping away from my phone:

1. Clearer Mind: Without constant notifications, I felt more focused and less stressed.

How We Can Overcome This Challenge:

1. Set Boundaries: Try setting specific times to check your phone. For example, I now check my messages after work, not during.

2. Find Offline Activities: I started reading more and even tried cooking a new dish. Find something you enjoy that doesn’t require a screen.

3. Practice Mindfulness: Taking a few minutes to breathe and be present helped me resist the urge to check my phone. It’s simple but effective.

4. Start Small: If going phone-free for a day seems too much, start with an hour or two. Gradually increase the time as you get more comfortable.

This experience taught me that while disconnecting from our phones can be tough, it’s also rewarding. I’m planning to make it a regular practice, even after returning to work.
