BLOOD SMEAR

 

INTRODUCTION.

  • Blood smear is a layer of blood on a glass slide.
  • A blood smear is used to diagnose and monitor numerous conditions including appropriate number cell morphology of white blood cell, red blood cell and platelets.
  • Blood smear use for detection of malaria parasite.

TYPE OF BLOOD SMEAR.

  1. Thin blood smear.
  2. Thick blood smear.

REQUIREMENTS.

  • 2 glass slide.
  • Blood sample.
  • Pipette.



PROCEDURE.



  1. Take a single drop of blood place to end of a slide.
  2. Place the slide on a flat surface.
  3. With your right hand place the smooth clean edge of a second (spreader) slide on the specimen slide, just in front of the blood drop.
  4. Hold the spreader slide at a 45° angle. And draw it back against the drop of blood.

  5. Allow the blood to spread almost to the edges of the slide.
  6. Push the spreader forward with one light , smooth moderate speed. 
  7. Label one edge with patient name, lab I'd and date.
  8. The slide should be air dry.
  9. Observe under the microscope.

CHARACTERISTIC OF GOOD BLOOD SMEAR.

  • Good smear is tongue shaped with a smooth tail.
  • Does not cover the entire area of the slide.
  • Does not contain any line's or holes.
